Space missions involve the transmission of vast amounts of critical data over long distances, hence having a really sophisticated Error Correcting Code is critical for reliable data transmission.
A quick search revealed 5 commonly used algorithms
- Reed-Solomon (RS) Codes
- Convolutional Codes
- Turbo Codes
- Low-Density Parity-Check (LDPC) Codes
- Bose-Chaudhuri-Hocquenghem (BCH) codes
3 out of the above 5 algorithms were part of the Cryptography course during my B. Tech and I remember implementing them for a college assignment.
I wish we were told that these algorithms are actually used in space missions, it would have made all of us more curious and we all would have spent more time understanding them in depth 🙃
Our CS curriculum is amazing and it lays a rock solid foundation for us to work in any domain.
It would make such a huge difference if instead of going into implementation specifics, our curriculum points out interesting real-world applications of the things we are studying.
